This item is a set of 8 ABP Pairpoint Cut Leaded Crystal Sherbert / Champagne Glasses. Pairpoint is the premier glass house in America; I can tell you more of their history in a second, but first about these 8 lovely pieces. These glasses from the early 1900’s are cut with the Pairpoint pattern 33. The glasses measure between 4 1/4″ – 4 1/2″ tall, 3 3/8″ – 3 1/2″ wide at the top and 2 3/4″ – 2 7/8″ across the base. One glass has a small chip on the underside of the base. All of the glasses show light wear and scuffing on the bottom from sliding on various surfaces. There are also some scuff marks and cleaning swirls at various locations on different glasses from general washing. There are no cracks, repairs or other chips than the one already mentioned. Two of the glasses have some sort of serial number etched into their base. Please see photo’s for details. As is characteristic of hand-blown glass, each and every one of these glasses is slightly different in size, weight and even shape than the others. Sometime around 110 years ago, a skilled glass maker formed the body of each glass from a single piece of orange, molten glass. Once the glass cooled, a skilled glass cutter craftsman would use a pen to mark the location of the wheel-cuts before carefully grinding the design into the glass. After the cutting each glass was then hand polished on a special polishing wheel before it was ready for sale. Any quality glass making machine today can pop out millions of glasses that are identical in every way. Not these gorgeous pieces of stem ware! Each glass is unique and has it’s own character; they also show some of the personality of the person who designed it. One feature I think is pretty cool is that since the weight of each glass is slightly different, they all have their own distinctive bell-tone when tapped! The stems are six sided and the base is ground cut on the bottom. So now here’s a little of the skinny on the Pairpoint company history. Pairpoint was founded in 1837 in New Bedford, Massachusetts as “The Mount Washington Glass Company”. In 1900 the company changed their name to “Pairpoint”, and today they remain the oldest glass making firm in America. During it’s heyday around the turn of the century, Pairpoint represented an era when American craftsmanship in glass ware was the best in the world. The years between 1876 and 1917 were known as the ABP (American Brilliant Period) era, when the quality and craftsmanship of American cut glass won numerous awards at international exhibitions. The compact, geometric cuts create brilliant facets that catch the light nicely on these lovely glasses. Look close and you can see how the design of these glasses look way-ahead-of-their-time. With their style these glasses would fit right into the 21st century; people would be amazed they’re over a century old!
