HEAVY Waterford Bethany Cut Crystal Set Pillar Candleholders Candlesticks 5 3/8 AUTOGRAPHED BY PHILIP O’KEEFFE. Up for your consideration is a clean and pristine pair of Waterford cut crystal pillar candleholders in the Bethany pattern. It is my understanding that the Bethany series is now retired and these candle holders are very hard to find-especially in pairs! As indicative of the genuine article, they exhibit the acid-etched hallmark of a left-facing seahorse with the name Waterford discreetly placed on the underside of the bases rim; as well as the famous bevel-cut starburst centered on the base. Very high quality, and of substantial weight, they radiate the legendary crystal prism affect expertly drawn out by Waterford artisans. Needless to say, pictures do not do them justice! As with all Waterford products, they have a classic elegance and versatility that will work with both historic, traditional, and modern style homes. BONUS: This set has been hand-autographed (hand-etched) by Waterford’s famous Master Crystal Cutter Philip O’Keeffe. This particular pattern, Bethany, is now retired. The set was autographed nearly 20 years ago by Mr. Philip O’Keeffe started working for Waterford at age 16 in 1973. Consequently, I suspect Mr. O’Keeffe, like the Bethany pattern, will soon be retiring. For detailed information on Mr. O’Keeffe and Waterford’s history, see “Other Notes” below. Like many of Waterford Crystals other craftsmen, Philip clearly recalls his first day at the plant as a green 16 year-old on July 2, 1973. It seemed a massive and confusing place, but the chance to work for Waterford Crystal overcame any initial trepidation, and his early years were spent cutting stars on the bases of tumblers and glasses and learning at the feet of the master glasscutters. Honing his craft at every opportunity, Philip achieved the status of Master Glass Cutter himself, specializing in Waterford Crystals heavier pieces; vases, decanters and salad bowls. It takes strength as well as skill and artistry to stand cut such pieces while standing, but Philip possessed both the might and the mettle. Today Philip is a Master Cutter at the House of Waterford Crystal in Waterford City. His favorite pieces to craft are those requiring deep cuts into the crystal. Traditional deep cutting requires many years of practice to get the cuts correct and consistent, and only Philips experienced eyes can tell him if he has got them right. But the risk is well worth the reward: classic cuts which give the piece the Waterford hallmark of optimum shine and sparkle. It is one of the great traditions in the realm of art, a tradition founded on patient and meticulous hand craftsmanship. The skill of Irish hands is only part of the story – there is also an uncanny power in those hands to impart something magical to glass. And in all of Ireland, no hands have been more patient, more meticulous, or more blessed with the elusive powers of art than the hands of Waterford crystal’s craftsmen. When the brothers George and William Penrose founded the Waterford Crystal House in 1783, they made a bold promise – to make Waterford crystal in as fine a quality as any in Europe in the most elegant style. It was no idle boast. They had in hand the old secrets of mingling minerals and glass to create Waterford crystal of beautiful and mysterious qualities. It sang sweetly at the tap of a finger. It felt soft and warm to the touch yet possessed strength and durability known only to Waterford crystal. And it radiated a distinctive, silvery white brilliance, which Waterford Crystal’s artists enhanced with deeply – cut ornamentation that gave the finished pieces a vivacious, traditional Waterford crystal sparkle. This great tradition lay dormant for a hundred years. But when Irish independence rekindled a passion for Irish arts in the 1940s and 1950s, a group of businessmen resolved to bring back to life the industry that had made the city of Waterford famous. In a few short years Waterford Crystal reclaimed its pride of place. Once more, it is the customary gift for royalty and heads of state. Penrose Brothers Establish Waterford Glass House in 1783. When the brothers George and William Penrose founded the Waterford Glass House in 1783, they made a bold promise – to make Waterford crystal in as fine a quality as any in Europe in the most elegant style. A splendid array of drinkware, serving accessories, and decorative crystal flowed from the Glass House into the aristocratic home of Europe and America. King George III ordered a set of Waterford Crystal sent to his residence at a fashionable resort, where “it has been much admired” by court society. At two exhibitions, the Royal Dublin Society bestowed medals for superb design on Waterford Crystal’s entries. Just as Waterford’s art was reaching its full flower, the financial climate turned grim. Post World War II Resurgence. After a period of dormancy, the Waterford story resumes in 1947, when glassmaker Kael Bacik hired fellow Czech Miroslav Havel as Chief Designer for his fledgling glassmaking operation in Ireland. Havel spent many hours at the National Museum of Ireland studying surviving examples of the Penrose brothers crystal from the 18th and 19th centuries. The Irish government has presented exquisite Waterford Crystal pieces to each American president from Dwight D. Eisenhower to Ronald Reagan. Waterford Crystal trophies are awarded for distinguished achievement in science and to the champions of some of the world’s most prestigious sporting events.
